چکیده

This study employed a conceptual combination task based on Estes and Glucksberg [(2000). Interactive property attribution in concept combination. Memory & Cognition, 28(1), 28–34] to address the question of whether semantic processing abnormalities in schizophrenia arise from deficits in semantic storage or access, or the controlled use of semantic memory representations. High thought disorder schizophrenia patients (n 1⁄4 25), low thought disorder schizophrenia patients (n 1⁄4 22), and controls (n 1⁄4 25) read and interpreted noun–noun combinations that varied with respect to whether the modifier noun had a salient semantic feature that could be mapped to a relevant dimension of a head noun. The percentages of property attributions, relational interpretations, and ‘‘other’’ interpretations were determined for each combination type. Subjective difficulty ratings were also collected for each response. Neither high nor low thought disorder patients differed from controls in the production of property interpretations. High thought disorder patients were significantly less likely to generate relational interpretations and significantly more likely to generate ‘‘other’’ interpretations. Subjective difficulty ratings were low for all groups, suggesting that differences in the ease of generating interpretations does not account for the results. The finding of intact property interpretations suggests that the integrity and initial access of semantic memory is spared in schizophrenia. In contrast, the reduced production of relational interpretations and increased production of ‘‘other’’ interpretations in schizophrenia suggests a see front matter r 2006 Elsevier Ltd. Imagery and the Interpretation of Ambiguous Noun-Noun Combinations

Novel ambiguous N-N combinations were created that had both a thematic relation and a property mapping interpretation (e.g., a cheetah truck = a fast truck vs. a truck for transporting cheetahs). Experiment 1 asked people to generate their own interpretations, which were then classified as involving thematic relations, property mapping or other. Experiment 2 asked people to choose which of the ...

Alignment versus diagnosticity: A critical test of two theories of conceptual combination

Sometimes people interpret novel noun-noun combinations by transferring a property from one constituent concept of the combination to the other. Two theories make different predictions about these ‘property’ interpretations. Alignment theory predicts that the properties transferred will be alignable differences of the concepts being combined. Constraint theory predicts that the properties trans...

Testing two theories of conceptual combination: alignment versus diagnosticity in the comprehension and production of combined concepts.

People often interpret novel noun-noun combinations by transferring a property from one constituent concept of the combination to the other. Two theories make different predictions about these "property" interpretations. Dual-process theory predicts that properties transferred will be alignable differences of the concepts being combined. Constraint theory predicts that properties transferred wi...

Efficient creativity: constraint-guided conceptual combination

This paper describes a theory that explains both the creativity and the efficiency of people’s conceptual combination. In the constraint theory, conceptual combination is controlled by three constraints of diagnosticity, plausibility, and informativeness. The constraints derive from the pragmatics of communication as applied to compound phrases. The creativity of combination arises because the ...

How Many Rooms in an Octopus Apartment? Effects of Prosody on Conceptual Combination

Previous theories of conceptual combination have failed to address the possible role of suprasegmental factors such as prosodic emphasis patterns. Here, we investigated the effect of emphasising the initial word (modifier emphasis), both words (dual emphasis), or the final word (head emphasis) on people’s interpretations of novel noun-noun compounds (e.g., octopus apartment). We found that dual...
